about
A bouncy, melodically intoxicating song, Social was originally written about trying to find the strength to leave one’s home and dive head first into a chaotic social setting. At the time the song was rediscovered, a very different situation was starting to play out around the world, stemming from the devastating coronavirus.
After losing his dayjob like many others, L’Estrange began social isolation. Listening over his old work, he realised that before he could release his newer music, Social now felt eerily relevant and needed to find the light of day. The next week was spent restructuring and reimagining the song’s various parts. As he began carving away at the track, warbling guitars and a danceable exterior started to blend and interconnect with a beautiful, dark underbelly. In its final form, the song evokes intimations of the unknown, restricted freedom and the struggle to overcome hardship.
lyrics
Lash out let the cat from the bag, everyone will talk to you
Get your things and rush to the cab, everyone's been waiting
I'm trying to be social
Awkward lines you feel in the way, sounds that stop being soothing
Liquid boredom you'll try to stay, let the first few hit you
I'm trying to be social
And I see that you're beautiful
But tonight all the same, can't be social
